Australian Bush Poetry
Not so much to read, but watch this video of scientists reciting The Old Grey Box of Heathcote Town while showing figures of ecological research that supports the poem.
Elephants and Cancer
Peto’s Paradox is an observation that the incidence of cancer does not correlate with body size at the species level. Larger species have more cells in their bodies, thus a higher chance for cancer because there are more cells that could become cancerous. So why don’t large species get cancer? New research (open) in elephants may provide a clue, specifically that a type of tumor suppressor gene has been duplicated in the genome so that elephants have 20 copies. The researchers also found that the cells express these genes (therefore they are not pseudogenes) suggesting a lot of tumor suppressing power!
